In 2024, I started posting on LinkedIn and explored diverse interests: investing, fitness, parenting, and philanthropy. While these topics may seem unrelated, I found myself increasingly drawn to a theme I’ve coined Radical Optimisation.
So, what is Radical Optimisation? It’s the blend of art (radical) and science (optimisation) in how we approach life. While evidence-based optimisation as science is straightforward, I’ve found that true optimisation often requires a radical perspective – this is where the art comes in. To be clear, I’m not advocating for radical ideas for their own sake; my goal is to transition these concepts into mainstream thinking. Remember, “radical” is a relative concept. Before the 1500s, it was radical to believe the earth was round; afterward, it was radical to believe it was flat.
Here are some key areas where I’m pursuing Radical Optimisation:
1. Radical Investing: At Quantos, we aim for 40% annualised returns over the long term. If you would like to find out more, please check out our website.
2. Radical Aerobic Fitness: Operating at zone 2 for 80% of the time is optimal, yet it may seem unconventional. Many still adhere to the “no pain no gain” mantra, often training in zones 3-4.
3. Radical Non-Aerobic Fitness: Pursuing different areas of non-aerobic fitness (strength, power, flexibility, balance), to be a jack of all trades, is optimal but uncommon – likely due to a lack of knowledge (and time).
4. Radical Longevity: I have a growing interest in longevity – not just personally, but from a societal perspective. I view this as an emerging frontier in philanthropy. I have developed the term “Longevity Stacking” as a tool to visualise the incremental impact of multiple uncorrelated habits.
I hope this concept of Radical Optimisation resonates with you and inspires you to embark on your own journey of being radically optimal!
